Like the rest of the economy, built environment industries are facing digital disruption.

New technologies such as 3D printing, drones, smart materials and more have flooded the industry, and recent development calls for the integration of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Building Information Modelling (BIM).

To advance the knowledge of GeoBIM in local professionals, Esri Singapore will be launching an introductory GeoBIM Application and Technology Certification Programme in partnership with BIMAGE Consulting, a leading technology firm in BIM and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC). The GeoBIM certification programme is the first of its kind in Singapore to have equal emphasis on GIS and BIM.

GeoBIM combines the best of geospatial data analysis with data about the building infrastructure, including 3D visualisations. “Bridging GIS and BIM has seen optimised designs, accelerated project approvals, reduced costs, smarter cities, and more resilient infrastructure," said Mr Lewis Goh, Chief Solution Architect, Esri Singapore.

“As the interest in digital twins grows, where a digital model describes a digital version of a planned or pre-existing physical asset, location-enabled foundation becomes a critical element to enhance the quality, safety, and sustainability of the asset,” said Mr. Ajith Menon, Managing Director, BIMAGE Consulting. The GeoBIM certification program focuses on harmonising BIM and GIS workflows and provides a geospatial context within which the assets are built.

Designed for industry professionals involved in all stages of creating and building infrastructure as well as analysing the impact to the environment, this three-day course demonstrates how GeoBIM technology can be applied throughout the building management lifecycle, from design to construction to operation and maintenance.

Participants will get to work with various components of Esri’s ArcGIS platform and BIM authoring tools such as Autodesk Revit. They will also learn to integrate BIM models in GIS quickly and be able to analyse BIM models in a geospatial context.

This training will help industry professionals understand the benefits of GIS-BIM integration across the project lifecycle – from the initial site investigation phase, through to the design and approval phase, and finally during the implementation phase.

Some highlights of the course include: Site evaluation as per the geospatial context and authority regulations, integration of GIS & BIM to perform visual ‘clash detection’ of services prior to finalising the design, and benefits of GeoBIM technologies in construction monitoring and logistics operations.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to implement BIM in the geospatial environment and perform GeoBIM analysis to make better business decisions.

The GeoBIM Application and Technology Certification Programme is open to all skill levels, though it would be helpful if participants have either BIM or GIS experience. The programme is part of Esri Singapore’s larger effort in the Built Environment space, with the first run happening from 6 to 8 Jan 2021.
